Last week we reported that Ubuntu 22.04 is planning to use GNOME 42, but still mostly GTK3 applications. On the official Ubuntu release page for this message, someone commented asking "Will Ubuntu 22.04 use the latest Linux 5.16 kernel?"
And Sebastien Bacher responded, "Currently the plan is to use Linux 5.15 for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, but the oem and hwe variants will get some features of the 5.17 kernel".
Linux 5.15 is slightly older than the latest 5.16 kernel release, but it is a Long Term Support (LTS) release that will be supported until October 2023. Linux 5.15 includes some interesting changes, such as a new NTFS filesystem driver, a kernel SMB fileserver, and various enhancements to the EXT4 filesystem that Ubuntu uses by default.
Users can update the latest kernel features through Ubuntu's HWE (hardware support).
