According to foreign media reports, in October last year, Zuckerberg announced to the world that he would fully invest in the Metaverse, with a total investment of $10 billion, and will continue to invest in the next few years. But now, his company's stock price has been hit hard for several months, and he has gradually stopped sticking to his investment attitude.

Zuckerberg said on Meta's first-quarter earnings call that Meta will "slow down some of our investments" given "the level of growth we're seeing in our business right now." Meta's first-quarter profit was $7.5 billion, down 21% year over year. Revenue rose 7% to $27.9 billion, the slowest pace since the company went public a decade ago. The target spending range for 2022 was lowered by $3 billion.

Because Zuckerberg believes the metaverse will eventually be as large as the mobile internet today, Zuckerberg is still spending billions of dollars every year developing equipment and software for the metaverse. Meta's Reality Labs division, which employs about 17,000 people, lost nearly $3 billion in the last quarter alone. The problem for Zuckerberg now is that Meta's investors are now uncomfortable with this level of spending, especially since such a large investment won't "return" over many years.
